Abstract: Using the Transfer matrix, we investigated the spectral properties of or dered, partially ordered, and completely random one-dimensional amplify ing systems. Weobservedthreetypesofpassbandsintransmissionspectraof a periodic structure: dielectric-related passbands, air gap-related passbands, and combined passbands. Upon incorporating randomness in the periodic structures, the underlying passbands shrink, and the underlying stopband widens. As we further enhance the randomness in one-dimensional (1-D) systems, the information of the stopbands and passbands gets entirely lost. By introducing a complex refractive index, we study the emission character istics of our system. Our study shows the possibility of controlling the spec tral properties of the random laser by exploiting the randomness of partially ordered one-dimensional systems.
