Abstract: Hot-melt Pressure sensitive adhesives (HM-PSA) have been widely used in industries. The most common type of industry application is Tapes, Labels, Graphics. There has been an increase in demand for Paper based adhesive tapes for Suitability cause. For carton sealing application Hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive based paper tapes are accepted widely in market. This project focuses on development of a new product which is having a Kraft paper as backing and Hot melt PSA as adhesive. This product has a very special requirement of Key characteristic like peel adhesion strength, Loop tack and Shear Strength. In this report covered general definition of Hot-melt pressure sensitive adhesive. This report covers general idea of HM PSA, Key factors related to HM PSA, it is Key Constituents/raw materials, effect of various parameters of Key constituents / raw materials on overall performance of HM PSA Tape. In this report, we analyze the various formulations having different Styrene block co polymer and their effect on key performance parameters of HM PSA tapes. Adhesion of hot-melt PSA to carton surface should be excellent which is otherwise called carton salability which is one of the critical property for carton sealing tapes. Di- block content percentage (S-I %) in Styrene-Isoprene- Styrene (SIS) block copolymer improves carton salability. Di-block copolymer (SI) decreases plateau (G*) modulus of adhesive compound. The damping factor (Tan δ) value increases. The low modulus decreases the shear strength of adhesive however, improves wettability to rough surface like carton surfaces which believed to a critical factor for improving Peel adhesion strength, tack and carton salability of HM PSA formulation. SIS/SI block copolymers are manufactured by anionic polymerization technique are used extensively in very large volume to pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes, especially to carton sealing tapes. In this project various formulations of HM PSA is developed with SIS+ SI co polymer with selected tackifier resin and oil to improve Adhesion and tack HM PSA.
