Abstract: Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon is very popular among researchers working in optical sensing domain, especially in chemical and bio sensing. This technique allows both qualitative and quantitative measurements of molecular interactions. The SPR sensors are highly miniaturized and can be used for real time and onsite sensing purposes. In this dissertation, we have first discussed the numerical simulation of a “self-referenced dual mode SPR sensor based on Au-Cu alloy” employing spectral interrogation technique. Motivation behind the use of alloy was to simulate a cost effective SPR sensor along with high sensitivity. In another work we have tried to fabricate a SPR sensor for the detection of the CN− ions. As a recognition element free base porphyrin was used of the CN−. Experimental analysis was performed using prism based SPR sensing set-up, having a SF11 prism, a SF11 glass substrate coated with silver (47.6 nm). The results obtained showed that utilization of alloy can have potential in SPR sensing technology, while alloy metals reduce the cost of the sensor, and increased the sensitivity. Whereas a successful detection has been achieved for the CN− ions in water and in the organic solvent.
