| Abstract: | Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant public health concern; conservative estimates suggest that about 1.6 million persons in India suffered from TBI each year. The primary causes of TBI in the Indian population have been identified as road traffic accidents and falls. The overall care of TBI, including the establishment of injury thresholds and personal protection equipment, requires knowledge of brain deformations during accelerative or impact loading. Current helmets offer good protection against linear effects (acceleration), but their ability to protect against rotating accelerations is unknown. Recent research suggests that rotational acceleration caused by head rotation is more harmful than linear acceleration in developing TBI. Deformation in the brain and skull is associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI). But the severity of TBI depends on the magnitude of deformation, relative motion between skull and brain and sudden change of momentum of the head. This study focuses on measuring full-field deformation associated head kinematic in the lamb brain's sagittal plane under impact loading. Both kinematic, as well as kinetic response of lamb brain impact, has been characterized. The impact response if the rotational model dominates the lamb brain. Overall, these results provide mechanistic insights into brain deformation under dynamic loading. This data can be used to calibrate animal models and to develop scaling sections. |
