| dc.description.abstract | In India, different types of configurations are used for steel Special Moment Resist ing Frame structures. Performance comparison of these configurations designed with Indian Standards are less documented. Expected yield strength of steel plate and hot rolled sections varies to great extent for different batches as producers in India does not specify the same. This variation in expected yield strength can lead to unacceptable behavior of structure. This study comprises of comparison of seismic performance of low and mid rise structures with two different spans for two configurations which are commonly used in India. Study of effect of variation in expected yield strength is also done. Comparison of the two configurations show different behavior for two different span length in terms of overstrength, damage during seismic event, material consumption. In study it is observed that connections are experiencing inelastic ity during static as well as dynamic analysis, which can contribute to undesirable performance of structure. With change in recommendation for calculation of shear demand of connection, structures can show acceptable behavior. Varitaion in expected yield strength lead to undesir able performance where beams does not take part in energy dissipation in contrast to design philosophy. Study shows the necessity of capping the expected yield strength of steel. Cur rent design of connections as per Indian Standard is also not capable of serving the purpose of seismic design approach. | en_US |
