Title: EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION OF EMISSION CHARACTERISTICS FROM 20-70 KW BURNER FLAMES

Abstract: The energydemandhasincreasedsignificantlywithtime,andfindingwaystoeffectively and sustainablysupplythisneedisessential.Asaresult,bothconventionalandrenewable energy outputwillneedtobeincreasedconsiderably.Itiscrucialtoidentifystrategiesfor addressing theseimmediateandfutureneeds.Fossilfuelscontinuetobeasignificantenergy source formanynationsinthepresent(75%)andthenearfuture(60-70%).Airpollution is oneofthemostsignificantenvironmentalissuestoday.AccordingtotheWorldHealth Organization, sevenmillionfatalitiesareattributedtoairpollutionannually.Mostofthese fatalities arecausedbybreathinginpollutedair,includingseveralharmfulpollutantssuch as particulatematter,ozone,andnitrogendioxide. Automobile exhaustandemissionsfromfactoriesandpowerplantsarecities’primary sources ofairpollution.Typically,industrialburnersareusedtoburnfossilfuels(Natural gas, LPG,dieseletc.)inindustrialapplications.Numerousnovelburnertechnologies and fuelmixturesarebeingproposedtolowerthepollutionfromthesame.However, little knowledgeisavailableontheclassificationofburnersbasedonsourceemissions. This currentworkfocusesoncreatingatestforevaluatingtheperformanceandemission characteristicsofanindustrialburner,alongwithtestingvariousgaseousandliquidfuel blends initwithparticularemphasisonemission. An indigenousburnertestrigisconstructedandusedwithvariousthermocouples,heatflux sensors, videoandthermalcameras,andfluegasanalysers.Foreachcaseofgaseousand liquid-fuelled flames,severalcharacteristicssuchasflamelength,flamediameter,volume, flowtype,heattransfertype,temperatureatvariousplacesinthecombustionchamber, and totalheatfluxaremeasured.Thenumerousemissioncomponentsthatmightbe detected intheexhaustaregivenmuchconsideration.Theconsequencesofvariousburner powerratings,equivalenceratios,andliquidblendsarediscussedindetailafterwards.Both conventionalandgreenfuelsusedinthepresentstudy,suchasCNG,propane,LPG,diesel, biodiesel,ethanolandDTBP,andatotalof125experimentsarecarriedout. The viabilityofusingCFDtocarryoutthenumericalsimulationofsuchresearchisalso investigated.TheCFDtoolusedinthisworkisOpenFOAM.Parametricanalysisto determine theeffectofairflowrateandoxygenconcentrationintheoxidiserstreamon variousflamecharacteristics(temperature,structure,emissioncomponents)havealsobeen carried out.
