| Abstract: | The knowledge of flow-structure interaction is vital for stability assessment in civil and wind engineering. As modern structures attain more heights and larger lengths, the structural response to aerodynamic instabilities, like vortex-induced vibrations and galloping, has a significant impact on the design of these slender structures. Thus, accurate prediction of the flow field becomes more important. Modern computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques, such as Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation (RANS) and large eddy simulation (LES), have been widely used to simulate flow behaviour around bluff bodies in wind engineering. This thesis investigated a bridge deck with an open cross-section, on which the interaction phenomenon between Karman-vortex induced vibration and galloping was reported during the wind tunnel tests. The open cross-section of the bridge forms the part of a steel-concrete bridge deck which is exposed to the wind flow during the incremental launching phase. CFD simulations were performed using OpenFOAMĀ® on a bridge deck with a typical open cross-section to visualise the flow field around the cross-section at various wind angles of attack. The choice of turbulence model is based on several published studies undertaken in the past. Initially, the simulation study is validated on a square cross-section using the published literature. In later stages, the numerical setup is extended for the two-dimensional and threedimensional simulations of the bridge deck cross-section. The aerodynamic coefficients of the numerical study are found to be in agreement with the wind tunnel static tests of the bridge deck section. Therefore, in the final chapter, flow field visualizations are presented to better understand the aerodynamics of the studied object. |
