Abstract: Several design approaches for panel zone are used worldwide and behaviour of panel zones in steel moment-resisting frames. In addition to that, various configurations of Special Steel Moment Resisting Framed structures used across the world and performance of that is also very less documented. This study remarks the effect of varying design philosophies of panel zone mainly American, European, current Indian and new Indian(preliminary draft) on seismic performance of peripheral SMRF and all SMRF considering 3 and 6 storey steel structures having bay width of 6m. Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses were carried out and performance was evaluated in terms of interstorey drift ratios, roof displacement and hierarchy of hinge formation in capacity-protected elements e.g., beams, columns, panel zones. A detailed review of design philosophies of panel zone as per current Indian code, preliminary draft of new Indian code, American code and European code are discussed. Results of this study showcased undesirable behaviour of designed steel structures wherein beams do not have significant contribution in overall energy dissipation. The findings of this study point out to some limitations in current design practice in order to achieve the acceptable seismic performance of structures as the structures already made using present design guidelines may require retrofitting.
