Ultimate strength of stool columns, used in buildings$ Is difficult to predict. With the frequent use of empirical formulae the designer's perspective is further blurred. An attempt is mod* hers to analyse the factors which determine the strength of such column... A brief historical review of the stability problem has been given. The elements of elastic stability have been die. cussed to fora a basis of design, In subsequent sections, it is shown that columns, under any stage of loading. elwatilt or plastic* are amenable only to this design approach• Results of the exact theory for calculating the critical column stress, presented hero, have been compared with the popular design formulae. Approximate method for the design of columns in buildings, as an extreme case of plastic collapse, boa also been presented. Testing of Columns under controlled end conditions could not be carried out but considerable data on column tostai conducted nt various renowned laboratories, has been collected to check the theoretical results.en_US
