|dc.description.abstract||The prosent dissertation entails the invest. 1gati ons carried out by the author on some aspects of subcri tical expansive transi ti o.ns in open channels. Conditions of t1ort in the expansive portion of the transitions, such as vator surface profiles, velocity distributi ozis, separation. phenomenon and the scour patterns on the downstream aide have been studied and the efficiencies of energy conversion found out, in each case, in order to adjudge their suitability for practical use. Scope of study was limited to "ifs constrte tion and 1:5 spay. The expansion curves, experimented upon , were of three types, namely, Sri A.C.Mi tra'9 hyperbola, Prof. R.S.Chaturvedi'a semi—cubical parabola and the square parabola (n2). In all these cased the bed of the transitions was given the shape of the water surface profiles that would be obtained for the same case on plane bed. Their shape was available from the earlier experiments (21) by I►ref. . ft.3 ,Chatury©di . As the depth of flow was ag auamed constant in the derivations of the above transition curves by *rt A.C.Mitra and Prof. R.S.Chaturvedi, the approach resulted in more realistic appraisal of the earlier reseal i.s and the present investigation. The existing literature has first been reviewed nut t,uen the results of the stu+iies carried out by the author have been reported. On their basis, comparison has been made with the previous results of Professor Chaturvedi's experimonts on1 the same subjeot with plane bed and the suitability of the transitions is further ascertained. gug ;estions have also been made for further investigations on the subjeot.||en_US|
