Abstract: Municipal solid waste (MSW) management is one of the major environmental problems of Indian cities. In the present study the two landfill mining projects were assessed in which the effectiveness and efficiency of the various type of machine installed for segregating the waste at the landfill site, feasibility for re-using the fine soils from the landfill site as compost as well as in some geotechnical applications and also re-using the Refused Drive fuel(RDF) for energy generation in various industries were studied. In the study the screening efficiency for different types of waste processing plant were done like disc type of capacity 100tph, vibratory type of 500tph &330tph and trommel of 70tph were done and the study reveled that the screening efficiency the waste is not satisfactory and this decreases the quality of the screened waste and hence the optimization of processing plants is required. The reuse feasibility of fine fraction as compost was assessed on the basis of nutrients levels (total organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium), heavy metals, and other physico-chemical characteristics. All the obtained results were compared with FCO standards and the study reveals that the re-use of fine fraction as compost should be restricted to non-agricultural applications due to excess heavy metals (mainly Cr and Zn) in some fine particles. Hence it should be used as compost after supplementing some conditioners to the compost and for using the fines in some geotechnical applications the study reveled that it can be used in geo technical applications but only taking some design measures. For re-using the Refused Drive Fuel (RDF) for energy generation in various industries study revealed that it can be used in industries for energy generations but only as SCF. In order to increase the grade of the RDF it needs further processing/ separation of the soil from RDF.
