PLANNING FOR INTERMEDIATE PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN KISHANGARH CITY, RAJASTHAN

Abstract

India is witnessing rapid urbanisation and motorisation. Cities in India behave like magnets, attracting a substantial number of migrants searching for better jobs, education, and other sources of income. The country's urbanisation rate was 31% in 2011 and is expected to increase to 50% by 2039. Motor vehicles are rising at a pace of 9% each year, whereas the urban population is growing at 3.16 per cent per year. (Sharma, et al., 2011). By 2030, India's urban population is predicted to grow from 377 million in 2011 to around 600 million (Census of India, 2011). There are currently 468 cities in the country with a population of more than 100,000 people. The construction of safe and low-carbon transportation systems that give all inhabitants with access to essential commodities, services, and activities is critical to the cities' long-term viability. Buses account for fewer than 1% of all registered cars in Indian cities today (Road Transport Yearbook, 2011-12). When combined with increasing numbers of personal vehicles, the higher population growth in cities poses a double-faced threat – hindering the movement of people and causing increased carbon emissions through these vehicles. Therefore, public transportation is a necessity to keep these threats in check. In fact, just a few cities in India have a well-organized, well-regularized, and well-regulated public transportation infrastructure. In the lack of a well-organized city bus service, Intermediate Public Transportation (IPT) modes such as 3-wheeler auto-rickshaws, Tempos, and Tata magic, among others, fill the void.
