The primary purpose of the AGC is to balance the total system generation against system load and losses so that the desired frequency and power interchange with neighbouring systems are maintained. Any mismatch between generation and demand causes the system frequency to deviate from scheduled value. Thus high frequency deviation may lead to system collapse. This necessitates an accurate and fast acting controller to maintain constant normal frequency. The conventional controllers and intelligent controllers viz., fuzzy and hybrid fuzzy have used for Automatic Generation Control for the two area hydro thermal power systems. The limitations of the conventional controls are slow and lack of efficiency in handling non-linearity. This dissertation work proposes a hybrid fuzzy controller and the design of a fuzzy gain scheduled proportional-derivative (FGSPD) controller with integral controller for automatic generation control for (AGC) of two-area multi input power system. The power system investigated comprises of two area hydro thermal system. The dynamic response has been studied for step load disturbance in area- lconsidering settling times, overshoots and undershoots of the frequency and the tie line power as the performance indices. The proposed fuzzy based controller and hybrid fuzzy controller is compared against conventional integral - and optimally tuned proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. The comparative analysis of the performance indicates that the hybrid fuzzy controller gives the best results among all controllers. The simulations have been performed using MATLAB.en_US
