| Abstract: | By 2030, India will have 68 cities with populations of over one million, up from 56 currently, with more than half of the population living in urban regions. Peri-urban Areas (PUAs) are a result of growing urbanization. Peri-Urbanization, as a result, is a relatively new phenomenon. It's a place of great dynamism and very differentiated areas that are undergoing rapid change in terms of physical, social, and especially economic terms, resulting in unplanned, haphazard expansion and huge infrastructural bottlenecks. For this thesis, a study on Understanding PUAs is conducted in the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) with the goal of defining and formulating a set of principles for present and future PUAs that will assist in making them a comfortable place to live and work. Extensive literature evaluation and research were used to define and comprehend PUAs. Categorization of study area is done after delineation of the study area followed by collection and collation of the data relating to the study. Data is collected from Census of India/ CMDA/ Block Development Office (BDO)/ other relevant authorities /Panchayat Office. A survey is conducted in the study area for the collection of primary data using an appropriate questionnaire and sampling method. Data is collected to find the degree of facilities offered in PUAs. The pattern of settlements is analysed through Analysis of maps. The connectivity of PUAs to the core city is identified. The study area's temporal land use change is examined utilizing a Geographical Information System (GIS). And finally, findings, inferences with guidelines, conclusions and further scope for research have also been indicated. Peri--urban interface is a ‘region of change’ and not a distinct entity. The focus is on the "urbanization course" than the simple form of "urban growth". The analysis proved that the physical, social and economic change occurred in PUAs. The quality of the life of PUAs has a change. Land use has grown significantly over the last 30 years. Agricultural land has witnessed strong reductions while built-up has increased. However, the infrastructure is not sufficient for facilities. Peri Urban is an area within an existing UAs where large changes in terms of physical, social, economic, and infrastructural facilities are taking place over ‘space' and ‘time,' with an emphasis on the ‘process of urbanization' rather than a single form of ‘urban growth,' paving the way for improving the quality of life for disparate socio-economic groups. “However, the emphasis may be made in maintaining Sanitary, Health and Solid Waste Management facilities for improving ‘quality of health’ of the people and surroundings as well”. |
