| Abstract: | Recognizing the inherently destructive nature of earthquakes and their escalating global impact, this study comprehensively assesses the seismic risks faced by Calicut and other key cities in Kerala, highlighting the critical need for effective preparedness and mitigation strategies. Utilizing seismic hazard assessments aligned with IS 1893 - Part 1, 2016, Calicut is categorized as a seismic zone III area, with peak ground accelerations (PGA) reaching up to 0.2422g horizontally and 0.1460g vertically, influenced by Fault-1 in the Arabian Sea. Similar analyses for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Palakkad, Kochi, and Thrissur reveal varying levels of seismic vulnerability across the region. The study employs Hazus software to estimate potential losses due to seismic events in Calicut, highlighting specific wards such as Ward 61, which faces significant economic impacts with ₹12.64 million in building damage and ₹1.43 million in content damage. Overall, the projected economic losses for building damage in Calicut amount to ₹2,342 crores, underscoring substantial risks relative to the municipal budget. Recommendations emphasize the urgent need for strengthening building codes, retrofitting vulnerable structures, and implementing targeted preparedness measures. These measures aim to mitigate risks and enhance resilience against seismic events. International collaboration and the use of advanced tools like Hazus are proposed to augment local capabilities for disaster preparedness and response in Kerala's seismic zones. |
