| Abstract: | Seismic activity poses a significant threat to human life, especially in densely populated urban areas, by causing buildings to collapse under high ground accelerations. Earthquake-resistant design aims to mitigate this risk by ensuring that structures are resilient to earthquake forces and minimizing damage to critical, socially, and economically important buildings. Structures are designed to withstand Maximum Considered Earthquake (MCE) without collapsing and remain serviceable during Design Basis Earthquake (DBE) events. These performance objectives must be met throughout the building's design life. Effective techniques to reduce seismic risk include retrofitting and using passive energy dissipation devices in building design. In this study, example building designed at DBE with higher importance factor is installed with tune mass damper and with viscoelastic damper to meet multi-level performance objective at DBE and MCE respectively. The purpose of this study is to create a engineering structure with passive energy dissipation system which follows standard codes recommendation to have significant utility during DBE and MCE events. For this, linear analysis procedure is followed to determine response of building with and without TMD and VED in terms of maximum inter-storey drift ratio and demand to expected capacity ratio. After the design of passive energy dissipation devices, assessment of this devices is also done to ensure its effectiveness during seismic events. |
