STRATEGIES FOR COPING WITH CLIMATE VULNERABILITY AT VILLAGE COUNCIL (GRAM PANCHAYAT) LEVEL AIZAWL DISTRICT, MIZORAM

Abstract

“The rate of warming is happening at a rate not seen in the past 10000 years” (NASA, 2023). The last decade from 2011 to 2020 was the warmest decade recorded, while the trend for the last forty years has been each decade showing a significant rise in temperature than the last. There has been a 1-degree Celsius rise in global temperature since the 1800s and consequent warming of the ocean by more than 0.33 degree Celsius. This has resulted in the shrinking of ice sheets, retreating of glaciers all over the world, the snow cover in the northern hemisphere decreasing, the 20 cm rise of sea levels across the globe and other rapid changes leading to extreme weather events like wildfires, hurricanes, floods, droughts, water scarcity occurring at an unprecedented frequency. Climate change has impacts across the globe yet is spread unevenly due to the difference in vulnerability levels across countries, states, communities, and individuals.
