Abstract: This paper investigates the intricate architectural designs of Kalinga temple chariots to discover their historical evolution, symbolic significance, and system of making. The Temple Chariots, known as "Rathas, Ther, or Biman" in different parts of India, are intricately designed and constructed mobile structures that are pivotal in religious processions and festivals. These are a subset of Temple architecture, making them an integral part of our architectural heritage. In this connection, it becomes vital to explore the segment of temple architecture that requires further study from an architectural perspective. The study aims to examine the evolution of temple chariot architecture, tracing its roots to ancient craftsmanship while also looking at contemporary adaptations. The objectives of the research are to document and analyse various temple chariots of the Kalinga region in order to explore the beliefs associated with the chariots, the system of making the chariots, the passing down of the trans-generational knowledge along with architectural features and functions, the relation they share with the Kalinga temple architecture and the relationship they share among themselves. Finally, this research aims to create a comprehensive repository of Kalinga temple chariots. This repository will provide a more in-depth understanding of the chariots' unique fusion of art, culture, and spirituality and aid in understanding and preserving the traditional knowledge systems. These findings are essential because they only prevail with specific skilled individuals whose numbers steadily decline over time.
