Abstract: The present study focuses on air-liquid and air-solid counter-current flows. CFD simulations of air-liquid and air-solid flows have been performed. For air-liquid flow 3D geometry of pipe was made of height 0.9 m and diameter 25 mm. This study was carried out by using VOF and k-epsilon turbulence model to track the interface between air and liquid. First it is simulated with air and water for validation and then with oil and air. Film thickness at various liquid and gas flow rates are observed. Effect of liquid viscosity on film thickness has been studied. For air-solid flow, combustion reactions are studied in rotary kiln for sponge iron process considering 3D geometry. ANSYS 2021R2 software is used for this purpose. Various CFD models like species transport, finite rate/eddy dissipation model, k-epsilon and P1 model are studied to get the results. These are useful in finding flow behaviour of species, temperature profile in bed and gas regions, turbulent fluctuations of velocity and radiative heat transfer.
