Abstract: There is perhaps no engineering filed today where the need for improvement is greater than in the field of power system Reliability. Power system Reliability is an interesting, challenging and rewarding fheld. Evaluation of power system Reliability is relatively new and increasingly important. A considerable and significant work has been done in the foreign countries in this field and some excellent papers have been published. The present dissertation, though not a compendium on power system Reliability, only aims at evaluating the supply reliability of a power system with par-ticular reference to Mysore Grid, to be adopted to improve the supply conditions have also been dealt with. Initially, the concepts of reliability theory and some important reliability parameters are defined and discussed. In the next chapter reliability calculation methods for the generating system incorporating both loss of load probability and frequency and duration methods have been discussed. In the subsequent chapter, evaluation of transmission reliability is outlined with the estimation of the required component parameters from field data and placing confidence limits on the parameters estimated. Here the statistical technicque "Regression Analysis"'making use of the method of least squares for estimation of component parameters is employed. 0 A method of evaluating the reliability at any point in a composite power system including both generation and transmission facilities with the adoption of*service quality" as the reliability criterion rather than simply continuity between sources and load points has been explained in the chapter on "Composite System Reliability Evaluation". The reliability studies of Mysore Power system with a brief introduction of the system, employing the above technique ,(have been presented in the next chapter. Before drawing conclusions, a compp, rison of standards adopted in various countries in the power system reliability practices, presented at the conference on supply reliability under the auspices of institution of Engineers, London during 9-13 July 1967 is given in the following chapter.
