Abstract: | This thesis focuses on developing the steady-state model of the electric distribution system of IIT Roorkee, Roorkee campus, and using the model to evaluate the impact of grid-connected solar photovoltaic (solar PV) system on the campus distribution system. A review of the impact of solar PV induced reverse power flow, over voltages, power losses, power quality, and harmonic distortion on distribution system reliability and power quality is also presented. It was observed that the campus distribution system was significantly different from the models of distribution systems found in literature. These differences include use of ungrounded 3-wire system at the 11 kV level, and complete under-grounding of the 11 kV system using symmetrical 3-core cables. The resulting 11 kV network was structurally symmetrical, although unbalanced loading resulted in slight unbalance in voltages and currents. Further, it was shown that using this model the effect of adding PV could be effectively studied. At present, IIT Roorkee does not follow model-based planning and operations of their campus distribution network. With almost 3 MW of rooftop solar PV installed, and expected growth of electric vehicles in the campus, it is critical that model-based planning and operations are adopted for safe, reliable, economical, and high quality power delivery to offices, hostels, and residences in the campus. This research is a step in this direction. |
