dc.description.abstract | Electric vehicles (EV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) offer a solution in reducing carbon emissions from the transportation sector and tackling climate change. The converter requirements for a Plug-in electric vehicle (PEV)/Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) traditionally involve the need of a converter for power conversion from battery pack to the traction machine and another converter for charging the battery pack from utility grid/charging stations. This leads to an increase in size of the drive, higher losses and increased cost, which is undesirable for penetration of EV technology into transportation sector. The charging power for EVs is majorly generated using fossil fuel based sources, which eventually contribute towards carbon-emissions. If the charging power is derived from renewable energy sources, there will be a significant reduction in carbon foot-print of the overall EV system. This thesis presents the work towards development of a family of integrated multiport converter topologies which can integrate battery pack, on-board PV (OPV) on vehicle roof and bonnet, generator control unit (GCU) power, utility grid and Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) for flexible power flow during driving, braking and charging modes. The work presented in this thesis starts with a detailed literature review of EV-PV technology in terms of architecture and topology study. It helps in selecting an architecture based on which the drive topologies are proposed. Topology development is divided into two groups: (a) PHEV architecture (b) PEV architecture. Two topologies (T-1 and T-2) are proposed considering PHEV applications and four topologies (T-3 to T-6) are proposed for PEV applications. | en_US |
