Abstract: | As part of studies on scattering of radiation using radiation detectors, we have used two types of detectors namely, silicon semi conductor detector and scintillation detector in order to understand the scattering of alpha and gamma radiation. The work can be divided into 3 parts. In the first part, in order to check the validity of physics processes embedded in GEANT4 simulation toolkit, we have made simulations of range of 5 MeV charged particles in Aluminium and Gold. Then, the number of' scattered alpha particles from Aluminium foil were measured and compared with those of simulations. In the second part. in order to check the validity of electromagnetic processes included in GEANT4 toolkit, we have made measurements on Compton scattering of gamma rays using a Aluminium scatter at different angles with the help of Cs-137 source and a NaI(Tl) scintillation detector. We have measured the Compton shift as well as scattering cross section at different angles and compared the results obtained from simulations. In third and final part, In order to understand the energy and Z dependency, we have made extensive measurements of scattering of gamma using water, concrete, Copper and Lead using mono energetic gamma sources Cs-137. I-Ig-203 and Zn-65 at different source-detector separations. The simulated and measured results are found to be in very good agreement with each other validating the usage of GEANT4 package in the field of radiation protection. |
