Abstract: As part of this master thesis, a method has been developed that made it possible to measure the in-plane and out of plane deformation of paper simultaneously under the tensile load, without relying on a contact with the sample surface. In this new approach a high resolution camera has been used for taking pictures of paper samples under the tensile load, in order to analyze the pictures with Matlab. Then the developed method was tested to monitor the effect of some important parameter during paper manufacturing like grammage, beating and calendering on both lateral contraction and thickness increase. Some experiments were also performed to know the effect of fiber orientation on thickness increase and concluded that thickness increase is possibly occurred due to straitening of the fibres lying in longitudinal direction of paper at the place of bending of the fibre lying in transverse direction. This work has also indicated the influence of surface roughness on the thickness measurement by mechanical method
