dc.description.abstract | The urban cities are experiencing various issues such as population explosion, increasing urban sprawl, reduction in number of open spaces, traffic congestion, haphazard growth, etc. The reason of these problems is due to substantial promotion of auto-oriented development and provision of road network. But now road network cannot match with the pace of growing number of vehicles. Cities in India are growing towards the fringe areas due to availability of land at a lesser cost and use their own private modes of transport for access to the city. There is absolutely no thought given to the integration of land use and transit system of the city. As a solution to these issues, western countries are already looking up to the various alternatives for the urban development. Many planning and urban design theories have come up since the end of twentieth century. These theories are namely Transit oriented Development (TOD), Multi Modal Transit System (MMTS), New Urbanism, Compact cities, Smart Growth, etc. All of these aim to have a transit oriented sustainable development giving importance to compact, high density, mixed-use development. It advocates to encourage the use of public transport over the personalized vehicles. All these concepts help to make the place better to live in or work at. This dissertation aims at having comprehensive understanding for all the concepts and attempts to consider TOD for the planning of sprawling Indian metropolises like Bangalore. The study concentrates on Bangalore Metropolitan Area but at the same time looking at the regional disparities with the Bangalore Metropolitan Region. It attempts to have certain broad recommendations for planning Transit Oriented Development in the city and strengthen the transit corridors by providing dense land use. A conceptual plan is made for the same. It tries to have a compact, mixed land use, high density development which has maximum accessibility by non-motorized means such as walking, cycling or by the use of Mass transit system. This could then serve as a model for future development in similar kind of issues of mega cities in India. | en_US |
