Abstract: This thesis report presents simulation of groundwater transport by Processing Modflow. The report consists of Introduction to the software and modeling of the River Alaknanda in Srinagar, Uttrakhand with and without well operation. Modeling has been done to explain the hydrochemical and isotopic characteristics of water from the well located adjacent to the river. The major problem with the well water is the presence of nitrates (>100 mgI!). From the model it is possible to speculate reduction in nitrates in well water by changing the location of the well. Simulations have also been carried out for alternate locations of the wells. It is suggested that the well which withdraws maximum water from the river without travelling much through the aquifer will yield water with low concentration of nitrates. Many of the aspects like surface roughness, irregularity of the porosity, different compactions etc are not considered.
