dc.description.abstract | The urban transportation is an important necessity of day to day urban life to support the mobility requirements of the passengers and freight. The system of transportation prevailing is a critical factor in an assessment for sustainability and efficiency of the city and highly affects the urban productivity. There is an urgent need for alleviation of problem to improve mobility and other traffic and transport problems especially in the medium sized Indian cities currently not covered under the JNNURM. Aligarh is tier 11 city and one of the National Priority Cities and potential urban growth centres of north India. It is an old city well connected to major urban centres of the region and country by rail and road, which has also structured its growth and development. It is 55th most populous city in India with one of the fastest growing populations due to the migration of people from rural areas as well as from other parts of the state and country mainly for education and employment. The city has only 3% of developed area under transportation against 7.11% proposed in Master PIan1981 -2001 hence pressure has been exponentially increasing on the existing infrastructure. The deteriorating status of the transport infrastructure and the unplanned growth of urban area have also affected other infrastructure and services, leading to poor environmental quality and public health. The project presents the analysis of transportation and mobility characteristics of urban arterials of Aligarh city and their associated problems based on household, traffic and other surveys conducted on urban corridor of NH-91 (G. T. Road) and its vicinity (core area) and analysis of various data collected from the government organizations and other sources. The road network characteristics, shift in modal split, change in traffic composition and volume on urban arterials over a last decade is made and discussed. Finally based on the results and findings, some significant recommendation(s) are suggested to improve the mobility condition and solve transportation problems for the projection year 2031. The report has been divided into 8 chapters, chapter 1 contains the definition of the problem, aims, objectives and methodology of research and its analysis followed by the review of related literature, historical data and information collected from various sources and case study of the similar projects in chapter 2 and 3 respectively. Chapter 4consists of methodology of research and data collection from the various sources by application tools & techniques followed by the study of characteristics the city and study area in chapter 5. The analysis of data & transportation system and mobility has been included in chapter 6. The results and findings has been compiled in chapter 7, followed by the recommendation and conclusion | en_US |
