Water transport is one of oldest and easiest mode of transport in the world. Water transport has been identified as the most economic, fuel efficient and emission free transportation options. It has major role to play in a resource rich developing country like ours. The lack of awareness and the courage to adopt and develop new technology has set us back in more than one ways from being a major economy. For an India which has major share of its population residing in rural areas than urban areas, transportation becomes a very crucial infrastructure. Linkages help in carrying development to the most rural communities. And at this point the transport option being economic and easily accessible becomes a crucial element. India has a number of waterways which can solve the issue of transportation very efficiently, not only through the rural-urban connections but also in cities like Kochi as an efficient intra-city mass transportation network. Developing water transport has more than one advantage. Since the waterway network of a city forms a signature of the city as an imprint of its nature and geography, it will always be unique to the city. Experiencing the waterways of a city can be commercialized through related tourism sector activities which range from simple cruises to high adventure level water sports or even a ride in the typical vessel of the city will be a truly unique experience to the tourists. For all this to happen, the waterways of a city should be maintained in a presentable and usable condition. The land-use plan of a "waterway rich" city should consider integrating and incorporating its waterways in its planning process and identify the different opportunities it can present. This dissertation deals with exploring the potentials of waterways and finding ways to incorporate and develop them as a popular means of public transports.en_US
