Abstract: | The Performance based design philosophy is based upon multiple target objectives considering multiple hazard levels. The main objective of philosophy is to define the structural performance on the basis of expected damage when it is subjected to particular intensity of seismic hazard. The conventional approach which is mentioned in the most of the code, designs the structure just to prevent collapse. For the proper monitoring of damage alternate approaches namely capacity spectrum method, displacement modification method and displacement based design are used now a days by engineers. in the presented work evaluation of performance of bridge is done which is designed using conventional approach. The alternative approaches mentioned above are used for evaluating the performance. For capacity spectrum method and displacement modification method, capacity curve is obtained by performing pushover analysis using finite element software (SAP2000). For performing displacement based design the modal characteristics are also taken from sap 2000. Finally results obtained from the three approaches are compared and advantage of using performance based design philosophy is discussed |
