Abstract: Here in the dissertation thesis, optimal placement of Distributed generator(s) (DG(s)) has been discussed. The advantages of DG can be cultivated by placing it in optimal location with optimal size. Optimal location and optimal size of DG(s) are obtained by running a Matlab program coded using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and other necessary functions. The objective of the present work is to minimize the distribution power loss reduction and maximize the benefits. The types of DG and advantages of DG installation are cited. The current status of DG in India and the world are presented separately. DG techniques are also described briefly. DG installation techniques and issues faced are explained. Optimization methods used in DG installation are many and PSO is being used in the current dissertation. A case study of DG installation has been carried out in a standard 33-bus distribution test system. Three different types of DOs are effectively placed in multiple ways under the objective of power loss minimization. Two types are being integrated based on benefit-cost maximization. The voltage profile improvement and power loss minimization for each case are also shown.
