Abstract: | Stickies, one of the main contaminants present in the recycled paper causes quality issues in the paper produced and their deposition in the paper making equipment cause downtime, affect the production of the paper mills. These tacky substances are quantified by various physical and chemical methods. In this study, the stickies are quantified by Soxhlct Solvent Extraction using Dichloromethane (DCM) as a Solvent. This kind of quantification is reliable since this gives the measurement on weight basis (g/kg) also includes the various stickies type like macro, micro, dispersed, colloidal and dissolved stickies. The extracted tacky substances of different type undergone characterization studies to derive their basic functional groups in Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The stickies are found to be originated from various adhesive and binders used during the paper finishing and converting process of their previous manufacturing process. The studies on stickies are being the main research area of focus nowadays because of the steady growth of paper recycling and deinking worldwide. |
