Abstract: Considerable research has been carried out in recent years to develope the relationships between accident rate and traffic flow, geometric characteristics of highway and environmental factors. Various prediction models have been developed by the researchers. The statistical approaches have generally used PoissonRegression and Negative Binomial regression models. The main objective of this report is understand the current models and their methodology which are used to predict the accident rate and to understand the trends in methodology that predict the safety performance of various elements which are considered in the planning, design and operation of Indian Highways. In this report, all those factors which affecting the accident rate are considered and improve the vehicle, roadway design to reduce the frequency of accident rate. An explicit review was done on the data and methodological issues pertaining to the crash data and the constraint experienced by the available data during analysis and modeling methods are used according to the suitability of data.
