Abstract: Presently the technology employed for power generation, transmission and distribution in a power system is continuously changing as the load demand keeps on changing. One of the new emerging technology is use of "Distributed Energy Resources" in both distribution and transmission system. DERs are the renewable energy sources which can be directly or indirectly connected to either customer's utility side or on transmission side. Earlier the generation of electricity was mainly done by conventional energy sources but now a days DERs are used on a large scale because of their large number of advantages. If DERs are used on distribution side then this technology is termed as "Distributed Generation". Distributed Generation (DG) is an emerging concept in the electricity sector, which represents good alternatives for electricity supply instead of the traditional centralized power generation concept. The use of DERs in distribution or transmission side helps in improving voltage profile and reduction in distribution losses, power quality etc. This thesis presents the basic principles of integrating DER technologies in transmission and distribution networks and particularly focuses on the impact of the DER technologies on power system. In this thesis it is described why DERs are installed in a power system and how they can be used. Their impacts on distribution and transmission voltage levels is discussed.
