Abstract: | The last few decades, there has been a significant increase in generation of municipal solid waste in India. This is largely because of rapid industrial growth, economic development in the country - and large migration of the population from rural area to urban area. Management of the - municipal solid waste is costly and difficult for the local authority. But it directly affects the human health, quality of life and environment, therefore management of the solid waste is so essential. An effective system of solid waste management must be both economically and environmentally sustainable. The process of SWM has two important streams of activities such as social approach and technology application. Gorakhpur isa city in the eastern part of the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. The population of the Gorakhpur city is 692519 as per the census 2011 and according to Master Plan 2021, the area under GNN is approximately 147 sq. km. The most important issue in the Gorakhpur city is poor management system of solid waste. Nagar Nigam Gorakhpur is responsible for planning, implementation and operation and maintenance of solid waste management system of the entire Gorakhpur city. At present the authority doesn't have their own solid waste management plan. Door-to-Door collection system is not introduced in the city. Collection of waste from roadsides or streets is not regular. Due to lack of designated landfill sites the collected solid waste generated by the city is being directly disposed either along the roads, open areas or are being used as land filling material for low lying areas. This present work is an effort to understand the situation of solid waste management and identify some suggestion for improvement of MSW management system in city. During the study, primary and secondary data was collected for understanding the situation of solid waste management. A structured questionnaire was used for this survey. The survey findings revealed lots of facts and figures and the improvement that the people in the area wanted and the changes that they desired should have been taken care of. And after this, i have suggested some proposal related to the better municipal solid waste management in city. My proposal is focused on improvement of activities involved in municipal - solid waste management such as storage and segregation, collection, transportation, processing and disposal. |
