PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF YAMUNA EXPRESSWAY

Abstract

The condition of highway and expressway network in India is very basic and the - economic losses due to poor pavements, amounts to a huge sum. Due to the poor condition of' pavements, it is estimated that an annual loss of approximately over Rs. 6000 crores is resulted in vehicle operating costs (VOC) alone. Any neglect in the maintenance is self defeating as it further adds up to the other deterioration parameters. India, having one of the largest road network consists of National Highways. Expressways, State Highways, Major District Road, Other District Road and Rural Roads. Yamuna Expressway is the latest infrastructure facility to be added to this list. The pavement distresses depend on various factors such as overloading, vehicle operating speed, environmental conditions and social utilities. It therefore becomes imperative that detailed studies be conducted to develop the relationships between various distress parameters. It should be borne in mind that for achieving the desired economic growth, the foremost requirement is to ensure a good and effective road network. In the present thesis work, an effort has been made to review the various parameters for performance of Yarnuna Expressway pavement. The performance concept, being generic - has been taken to include roughness, visible distresses, skid resistance and structural adequacy. Pavement performance analysis helps in arriving at the most appropriate maintenance and rehabilitation activity or remedial measures, suitable for a particular section of the expressway as per the availability of the funds.
