Abstract

Urban redevelopment is a process to improve economic, physical, social and environmental condition of an area. Rapid urban growth often leads to the collapse of the city cores, since urbanization move at a rapid pace in cities. The project deals with developing strategies of Urban Redevelopment and its applicability in detail, the concept of urban redevelopment is to study and analyse the character of a special area called Suraj Kund Sports Market in Meerut (Uttar Pradesh) in detail. The study would lead to a indebt scrutiny and analysis of the case area through examining the existing situation and the area specific project, to identify the prevailing problems and key issues of the marketplace and finally recommending design proposal for the Urban Redevelopment of the precinct To achieve these objectives, a methodology has been adopted consisting of Literature study which comprises of research relating to Urban Redevelopment through various case studies as well as studying the background of the area and its components and respective development plans that have been studied. This stage is followed by analysis compiling primary and secondary information collected through extensive field survey and study of several areas on several parameters like building and housing condition, infrastructure availability, socio-economiC and cultural factors, congestion and parking etc. In context of examining ground realities of the area, few area specific projects have also been reflected upon to get a better understanding of the present scenario prevailing regarding the marketplace and the status of different development initiatives. The study concludes with design recommendations regarding overcoming the issues in the area which have been assessed through critical analysis of the case area. The area specific project will show that the organizational setup needs to be strengthened for such plans to be implemented. This marketplace is designed such that it can be used as a model for other similar renewal or redevelopment projects
