The large scale use of power electronics equipment has led to increase in harmonics in the power system. Power converters and non-linear loads cause harmonic injection, power factor reduction, distortion in voltage waveform and decrease in efficiency. Losses created by them shorten the life of power equipment. Harmonics are considered as pollutant which pollutes entire power system. To eliminate these harmonics, tuned passive LC filters and active power filters are introduced to provide compensation. Shunt Active Filter provide variable compensation and has superior qualities over its contemporaries namely SVC and STATCOM. Shunt active filter is designed to be connected in parallel with the non-linear load to detect its harmonic and reactive current and to inject into the system a compensating current. It compensates unbalancing and reactive power in the system, mitigating harmonics. Thus power factor also approaches unity as only active power is supplied by the source. Simulink models of Shunt Active Power Filter have been designed using different control approachs.en_US
