Abstract: Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) nre becoming popular cver Induction machines in the field of modern variable speed AC drives especially in electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid EV. Its advantages include high power density, high torque to current ratio, high efficiency and ease of control. Field Oriented Control of PMSM can he easily implemented using dynamic model. Torque ripple in permanent-magnet synchronous motors is generally undesirable. Superior performance of Multi Level Inverter(MLI) over two-level inverter can be utilized to improve the performance of the PMSM drive system. This thesis deals with the modeling, simulation and performance analysis of Multilevel Inverter fed PMSM drive with Diode-Clamped and Cascaded H-Bridge topologies upto Five level. Both SPWM (Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation) and SVPWM (Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation) schemes were implemented. Different Control strategies for PMSM motor are also compared. A detailed model of the electrical and mechanical systems of MLI fed PMSM drive in Closed-Loop manner with a view point in vehicular application, is developed using the simulation tool Matlab/Simulink. The effectiveness of MLI fed drive over 2-level are verified from the simulation results. Hardware Implementation with 3-Level Diode Clamped Inverter is also done
