Abstract: | The dissertation underlines sanitary cond.: of the slums in Kanpur city and intervention of goverirrent and various government policies and guideline for providirç sanitation to the urban poor. Since the level of problem is too enormous and the efforts invested by the authorities looks to be spread in bits and pieces. The current level of efforts is not being proof effective in creating an open defecation free atmosphere and provides sanitation services to the urban poor. The research methodology was adopted in order to understand the causes of open defecation in the city, the research began with the understanding of characteristics of the slum settlements and various approaches for the slum improvement. The attempt was also made to review the case studies where sanitary infrastructure has been successfully provided in order to create a open defecation free environ ment. The findings of the report highlight that it is one of the most difficult basic need to fulfil, with millions of people devoid of proper sanitary infrastructure. Therefore it one of the most urgent requirement to develop a mechanism to address the issue. Through the study, some guidelines and strategy are suggested to minimise the open defecation problem for the urban poor and to improve their environment and health. |
