Abstract: In railway engineering rail-wheel interaction mechanics is one of the most important area which is requiring the vast application expertise and also the dependable analysis approaches. For fatigue analysis and wear calculation regrinding and niaintenance scheme and finding the design life, the contact area and pressure distribution in rail-wheel contact analysis and there are the basic and the essential information needed. The contact patch size and shape will change if there is any surface damage in rail or in wheel during the rail-wheel interaction. The main aim of this project is I. To understand, formulate and simulate wheel-rail interaction analysis at static conditions with a view to optimize the wheel. To optimize the mass of the railway wheel subjected to both vehicle load and contact pressures. To understand and simulate the elastic -plastic behavior of railway wheel Finite analysis of rail wheel interaction is done by using the software abaqus, the contact between the rail and wheel has an elliptical contact area, from static analysis it can be seen that the contact area depends only on the normal load and this analysis is used for a realistic optimization problem of railway wheel shape and size.
