Different kinds of sediments occur on the sea floor. Sound waves provide the best means of exploring the nature of these sediments. When sound waves are incident at the surface of these sediments they are reflected as well as scattered. The reflection coefficients as a function of angle of incidence have been computed for different kind of sediments vatying from clay to coarse sand. It has been found that in general reflection coefficients are higher when the wave velocities in the sediments are greater. Scattering of sound waves is a function of frequency. The scattered energy decrease as frequency increasesen_US
