Abstract: | Public Transit Systems carry large shares of person travel in older and larger metropolitan areas around the globe and that too in the most economical and safest way, but still public transit is losing market share to private vehicles. Attributes of low public transport share includes high population density, higher levels of private vehicle ownership, insufficient parking availability and cost, improper transit network extent and service frequency, transit fares, transit system safety and cleanliness. Understanding the relative influence of these factors is still central to public policy debates over transportation system investments and the pricing and deployment of transit services. This research aims to study the current transportation system of Jaipur and the proposed metro system to be introduced in the city. A stated preference survey was conducted in the influence area often metro station in Jaipur, to study the willingness of commuters to shift from their current mode towards proposed metro. The commuter's demographic and socioeconomic attributes (gender, age) and trip-related attributes (trip purpose, trip costs, trip distances) were found to be statistically significant in influencing modal shifts to Metro. Ridership characteristics and preferences were found to vary significantly by metro stations based on travel mode, demographics, socioeconomic status, and the perceived benefits in travel time and trip costs, suggesting that metro deployment strategies must recognize the heterogeneous nature of ridership and travel preferences. The probability of modal shift to metro was found to be 43.5% (2W-33%, Car-42%, Auto-34%, Bus-65%). N-logit version 3.2 was used for RP and SP modelling. Finally, based on the model certain policies were analyzed so as to increase the share of public transport |
