Abstract: | Geographic Information System (GIS) plays important role in decision making related to earth or ground for decision makers. What if this system can be used by a normal user and he or she can take advantages of services provided by a GIS. Now days, this comes true that people are gaining benefits of these GIS services online through a Web GIS. Web GIS enables real time visualization of available spatial data to a huge number of users who can be present anywhere on the globe and helps them to make decisions. Web GIS becomes increasingly important in times of a natural disaster when the data needs to be updates as soon as possible. But there is a huge amount of people who is computer illiterate but familiar with smart phone, so there is big need to port GIS service on smart phone so that maximum people could be benefitted and take use these services anywhere. Handheld sophisticated GPS devices are generally manufactured by hardware companies who have monopoly over it and control the price of the devices in market according to their need. These handheld devices are not capable of deciphering the phase component of GPS signals, so as the GPS module present on-board the smartphones. An attempt has been made to convert the smartphones with existing configuration used in our daily life into a mapping device capable of performing the same function of capturing the GIS geometry of point, line and polygon. The application will not only capture the GIS geometry but will also capture the ground truth data as a digital imagery the data captured by the smartphone running the developed application cannot be forged or tempered theoretically. The application will render the authorities to track the movement of the ground party using smartphones running the application developed. The overall performance of smartphone and its capability to shill dependency from legacy handled devices is tested by comparing its accuracy against the legacy systems and the GPS system utilizing external antenna. The research concludes with discussion of possible area of application of the developed mobile application |
