Quality of drainage is a key parameter which affects the performance of the highway pavement. A poor quality, of drainage results in frequent and premature deterioration of pavement structure. In such cases, pavement will need maintenance more often than a good quality drained pavement structure. Performance of the highway pavement can be improved by improving the drainage system. Based on this analysis, it may be concluded that the pavement sections with good drainage quality may perform better even with more pavement age, higher traffic growth rate and more saturation time than the pavement sections with poor drainage quality and less pavement age, lesser traffic growth rate and less saturation time. The improvement of the surface drainage is needed for two reasons (i) to control the tendency of the hydroplaning and (ii) to minimize the excessive splash and spray. Both the issue are important with respect to the road safety issue. The tendency of hydroplaning and splash and spray can be minimized if the water film thickness (WFT) on the pavement surface after the rainfall is controlled. This study present the evaluation of urban pavement surface drainage system by estimating the speed at which hydroplaning will occur and comparing it with the design speed of the section. The PAVDRN (pavement drainage) programme is developed at the Pennsylvania transportation institute has been used for this study. Thus, it is expected that this study will useful to improve the highway drainage system and thus to reduce the maintenance cost of highway pavement system in india.en_US
