FILTRATION AND SUSTAINABILITY OF WATER QUALITY IN ROOF-TOP RAINWATER HARVESTING

Abstract

Rainwater quality is an indispensable aspect governing if the harvested water is good enough for drinking or not. But owing to the expeditious increase in urbanization and industrialization the quality of rain water is demeaning. The present experimental analysis prioritizes on roof-top harvested rainwater quality for potable use. In this roof-top harvested rainwater is monitored for certain duration to trail the abidance of its quality with drinking water parameters based on Indian Standards on storage with time. The experimentation has been carried out in the view to know about any alterations that might occur in the concentrations of different parameters of the stored water and are essential for using it as potable water, governing its purity and sustainability over longer durations of storage and to know about the varying water characteristics with different storage methodologies. The rainwater was collected from different sampling locations within the concerned study area of Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee campus, India based on the surroundings of roof material, material of downpipe and different pollution level attributing to their proximity to different traffic loads. The outcome of this experiment can provide some ground rules regarding efficient roof-top rainwater harvesting, filters, filtration, the selection and design of different storage system with respect to the materials used and storage conditions and also the correct technique for the storage of harvested rainwater. The similar experimentation can be carried out at other places as well with more sampling locations for more diversity and analysis in the results.
