Abstract: The paper industry utilizes diversified lignocellulosic biomass as fibrous raw material. These include woods, non-woods, and agro-residues (wheat straw, rice straw, bagasse). These raw materials differ in composition of cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and extractives and, therefore, require different process condition during pulping. The active alkali charge, the bath ratio, the cooking time, and the temperature of cooking vary considerably from raw material to raw material. The resultant black liquors from theses raw material have different composition and have differences in their thermal as well as rheological behavior. Thermal properties, rheological properties and composition of black liquor have direct impact on efficient recovery operation. The present study has been carried out to characterize black liquors from bagasse, rice straw and wheat straw difference in properties of these black liquors. Hard wood has also been included in the study for the sake of comparison. Elemental analysis, heating value, organic-inorganic ratio, silica content, TGA, rheology for the four type of black liquor has been experimentally determined.it has been observed that the agroresidue black liquors have significant differences in properties from the wood black liquor. The results have been discussed in subsequent chapters
