Abstract: Some very interesting and outstanding examples of buildings have been built on hills during different periods of human civilization which reflect the sensitivity and genius of the builders. • Hills are attractive in their natural state, at the same time; these sites are most challenging to • carry any development work. Construction of buildings in hilly terrain is constrained by their difficult terrain, steep gradients, complex geological structure, adverse climatic conditions and rich flora. In response to these settings various built form, construction techniques and patterns of development have emerged in different hill regions. As per the observations and understandings of various hill towns, it is found that in the present scenario, the character of hill towns has changed drastically. Planners, architects and designers are not able to understand the aspects / features of buildings in hills which are necessary for making the buildings contextually appropriate or they are not able to relate it to today's needs. There is also lack of understanding and sensitivity about the factors which are responsible for the incompatibility of the contemporary buildings. Moreover there are limited regulations and • guidelines to ensure compatibility of contemporary buildings with their surroundings. Yet there are some outstanding examples of contemporary buildings that merge well in their - context. 1-lence there is a need to study and understand the design issues, factors influencing the contextual appropriateness of buildings in hills and formulation of strategies for the construction in hills with a focus on site planning, functionality, space requirements, safety against disasters, services, energy conservation, aesthetics to ensure better compatibility between the built up and nature.
