Abstract: | This dissertation report will provide a brief insight into Earthquake Resistant design and the methodology involved in Seismic evaluation and Retrofitting of existing structures. The report also incorporates aspects of computer software modeling against seismic loads. Earthquake creates great devastation in terms of Loss of life and money due to failure of structures is characteristics of an Earthquake. Therefore, it becomes very important to upgrade the seismic resistance of the structure, especially in case of old ones, and the ones of prime importance like hospitals, historical monuments and the expensive structures. When a building has been designed ignoring the adherence to seismic code, it poses a threat due to its inherent deficiencies in design. The seismic evaluation conducted to investigate if the structure is achieving desired target structural performance levels. The primary objective in the event is to ensure that the structure doesn’t collapse and the risk of mortality is nullified. The other objective is to ensure that the structure meets post-earthquake performance level for defined range of seismic hazards. The software modeling of the structure aids in determining the deficiency and weak components in the event of an earthquake. It is often found that Seismic Rehabilitation of an existing building is cost-effective than constructing new building. It presents an opportunity to upgrade the overall performance, sustainability and efficiency of an existing building. Seismic retrofitting makes an existing structure achieve more resistance to the seismic activities due to earthquakes. It corresponds to correcting the deficiencies by increasing strength, stiffness or deformation capacity and improving connections. This dissertation hence tries to establish the advantages of mix retrofitting measures to align with the needs of the structure through the preferably much economical route. |
