Abstract: Interfacing of man and machine is a complex phenomenon, mismatch affects severely system performance and hence system reliability. It leads to deterioration in performance or accidents depending on the situation. In army operations, it may lead to non-achieving of the stated mission eventually leading to loss of battles and human resources, completely not desirable. Thus a new multidisciplinary approach has been considered to match human and machine reliability, to study and quantify the Human Error (HE) based on system analysis, probability and statistics. The study has been conducted to analyse the effect of HE in an army maintenance workshop and a study is done for the transmission system of a new generation vehicle. The human error inducing factors (HEIFs) have been developed in consultation with the experts working with army workshop. Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM) is used to identify the parameters and their relationship and probability of human error (HEP) have been computed using Human error analysis and reduction technique (HEART) where Fault Tree method is applied to integrate related tasks and subtasks. Further, the selective maintenance strategy with target reliability and consequences of HE has been framed. Effect on Sub-system reliability was computed and effects of HEP was analysed on the system reliability. A model for allocation of manpower was developed to minimise HE during selective maintenance of transmission system in a given scenario
