Abstract: | Small-scale hydropower was the most common way of electricity generating in the early 20th century. In 1924 for example in Switzerland nearly 7000 small scale hydropower stations were in use. The improvement of distribution opportunities of energy by excessive voltage transmission lines triggered fainted hobby in small scale hydropower. Small hydropower is one of the promising renewable strength resources in India. Despite the small hydropower potential, India is yet to develop small hydropower plants to supplement its energy needs. The small hydropower stations do not require construction of any heavy structures. The geology along the location of various project components has been found to be favorable for founding these structures. The main focus of this research work is on the identification of potential small hydropower site for the generation of energy as an alternative source of rural electrification. In this study the selection of electro mechanical equipments are done as per the availability of head and flow rate at Asafnagar fall in upper Ganga canal. The Asafnagar SHP is located in the Roorkee tehsil of Haridwar district of Uttarakhand state in India. The Asafnagar Small Hydel Project is a run-off the river scheme for Power generation on River Ganga at parallel upper Ganga canal, with an installed capacity of 4400 kW. Hydroelectric power or hydroelectricity is basically electrical energy that has been generated using natural forces such as gravity or flowing water. It's usually produced by dams, because dams can store and direct large volumes of water. Hydroelectric power is becoming increasingly popular. Hydroelectric power is the most popular "green" energy source for several reasons. First, the cost of the fuel needed to generate hydropower is miniscule because the process doesn't use any of the more common polluting fuels, such as oil, coal, or natural gas. This means that, unlike other power plants, hydroelectric plants don't produce carbon dioxide. A hydroelectric plant is also a lot cheaper to operate because it can be fully automated, saving labor costs, and because its facilities don't need to be repaired frequently. Many hydroelectric plants have been in use for at least 50 years, and they are still running smoothly |
